Essay on Disney’s Entertainment Empire Exploiting Innocence

Disney is loved by millions of people around the world, but when it is exposed beyond the smiles and the music, Disney is far from being magical. When Americans are asked to describe Disney into words, majority would often reply with energetic responses, such as magical, imaginative, creative, and inspirational. Although Disney’s accomplishments dominated the world of fairy tales and fantasies, many people argue that Disney targeted innocent children for all the wrong reasons. Walt Disney developed his business into a multi-billion dollar television network, theme parks, motion pictures, vacation destinations and media corporations that carries his name. However, the controversial issues raised in Frank Zipes’ essay â€Å"Breaking the†¦show more content†¦Walt Disney abused his power in the media because he control multiple media outlets and basically shape reality for viewers. The documentary, The Mickey Mouse Monopoly: Disney Childhood and Corporate Powe r, further explain Disney’s representation of corporate power and entertainment by using romance as fantasy that doesn’t need to be questioned by anyone. Disney’s tactical way of appealing to majority allows our society to be blindsided by â€Å"special effects†, commercials, and magical aspect of Disney’s tales. Furthermore, Disney utilizes gender by applying sexual and erotic connotation that are observe by young children which are heavily emphasized in stories and fairy tales produced by Disney Productions. Zipes continues his argument towards Disney demonstrations of hyper sexualized images and reveals, â€Å"The carefully arranged images narrate through seduction and imposition of the animator’s hand and the camera† (Zipes 351). Zipes reminds us that Disney use delightful images, humorous figures and erotic or sexual signs to deprive the audience through the production and manipulation. Audiences can no longer visualize a fair y tale for themselves as when they read because pictures and film remove the audience from envisioning their own characters, roles, and desires.
